Bodywork
What is bodywork?
Bodywork is a holistic therapeutic somatic practice in which the body remains a guiding presence. Bodywork can enable individuals to re-awaken understandings of their embodied self through a process of increased bodily consciousness and refined awareness. Touch, or hands-on techniques, provide the medium through which somatic sensation and emotional experience can be brought into clearer focus.
What does bodywork involve?
What are the benefits?
Hands-on is central to bodywork. Clients remain fully clothed during sessions and verbal communication is often minimal. The practitioner is guided by the client’s needs, engaging intuitively with different tissue in the client’s body through varying qualities of touch. Hands-on offers a unique point of connection between client and practitioner, helping focus the client’s attention on the tissue being explored, and acting as a means of sensory communication. During hands-on, the practitioner follows sensation responses in the corresponding tissue in her own body to develop a nuanced somatic understanding of the client. Through sensory awareness processes, the practitioner and client build an integrative therapeutic relationship.
Bodywork can enable clients to tap into the innate intelligence and wisdom of their bodymind. With support, clients can gain insight into their patterns of behaviour and personal relationships, develop a more embodied understanding of responses to life events, and increase their decision-making potential.
Bodywork can also help to:
-
Release bodily tension and calm the mind
-
Support the integration of responses to life experiences
-
Develop personal boundaries and greater resilience
-
Facilitate healing after injury or ill-health
-
Improve posture and expand movement range
-
Promote increased forms of expression
