Dr Brenda Downing (Ph. D)

I am a registered Clinical Counsellor with the Psychology and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA, Register No. 30526) and a member of the WA Association for Mental Health  (WAAMH) and the Mental Health Professionals Network (MHPN)

As a registered professional member of PACFA, I meet their high Standards of Practice and uphold their Code of Ethics. I am committed to developing my therapeutic practice through ongoing supervision and professional development, and continue to deepen my knowledge base through personal research and wide reading, as well as conversations with professional colleagues.

I am also trained Shark Cage® facilitator and a qualified Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist. My entry into the field of somatics started in 2010, when I began studying with Alice Cummins. I am a graduate of her ISMETA-registered Somatic Wisdom program. Based on the practice of Body-Mind Centering®, in-depth areas of study included cellular consciousness, experiential anatomy, hands-on techniques, developmental movement patterns, embodied somatic knowledge, and expression through movement.

In addition to my therapeutic practice, I am a feminist educator and completed a Ph.D at Edith Cowan University in 2014. My award-winning thesis, 'Feeling the Fleshed Body: The Aftermath of Childhood Rape', published by Peter Lang London in 2016, focused on contemporary understandings of the presence and expression of body-based sexual trauma in women. Feminist philosophies and values underpin my therapeutic practice, primary interests, and research.  I am committed to supporting women's  wellbeing and broadening public understandings of women's lived experience. Other interests include embodied forms of inquiry, including creative writing and movement practices.
